The Foundation brings together the background knowledge that the SYNERGISE project builds on. It describes the operational world of Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and firefighting, the people and organisations involved, the human factors that shape how they work, and the technologies being developed and tested.

This section is meant as a shared reference for all partners. It can be read as a guide: from operational demands, to human factors, to the technology that is designed and integrated. Together, these pages help explain why the project focuses on the four use cases and what challenges the new solutions must address.

== Operational Demands ==

This section explains how USAR and firefighting operations are organised, what the scale of incidents looks like, and which stakeholders are involved. It also introduces **personas and problem scenarios** that capture the difficulties responders face today.

* **Environment & Scale**: from collapsed houses to industrial plants; the problems of noise, dust, fire, and unstable structures.
* **Organisation & ASR Levels**: how USAR and fire brigades structure their teams locally and internationally.
* **Stakeholders**: the main roles on-site and at headquarters.
* **Personas & Problem Scenarios**: fictional but realistic characters with current challenges they face.

== Human Factors ==

Human factors describe the limits and strengths of people working under pressure. This section shows how stress, trust, workload, safety, and teamwork affect real operations.

* **Situation Awareness**: how responders build and share a picture of the scene.
* **Trust**: balancing reliance on human colleagues and automated systems.
* **Workload**: both mental and physical, and how to prevent overload.
* **Safety**: dealing with hazards like collapse, fire, or toxic gas.
* **Human–Machine Collaboration**: ways of structuring teamwork between humans and technology.

== Technology ==

This section presents the systems and devices being developed or integrated in SYNERGISE. Each technology page explains its capabilities, possible uses in the field, and lessons learned from interviews and exercises.

* **(Ground) Robots**: ANYmal, SNAKE, robotic arms.
* **Drones (UAVs)**: OWL indoor swarm drones, ASTRAL RTK outdoor drones.
* **Wearables**: SYSNAV location trackers, WEARIN health-monitoring vests, AR glasses.
* **Communication**: satellite-based networks and the integrated management system (IMS)
